What a lot of people don't understand is that Genesis 1:1-2 is talking about the 1st & 2nd heaven and earth; the 2nd heaven and earth is where we are today. If you get that, then you get the big bang theory and how that actually fits with God's word.
God always starts at the point of perfection. So why would he create an Earth that was "without form and void". He didn't. He first created the Earth, then when the angel (Lucifer) rebelled against God along with 1/3 of the angels there was a cataclysmic event (Isaiah) that destroyed the Earth - leaving it without form and void.
Genesis 1:1-2 KJV
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness [was] upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.
The key is in the word "was" above in v.2. This word should have been translated as "became". If you look at the original Hebrew word "haya", it is sometimes translated as "became".
Now it makes sense. v.1 is the first heaven and Earth that God created in the beginning. v.2 is after the event that took place that destroyed God's original creation. Notice he doesn't need to create the earth again (you can only "create" something once.)
In the next administration (right now we are in the Grace Administration which ends at the gathering together), which is what Revelation is about (this book is not addressed to us, it is for the next administration, which is why it's so hard for us to understand and decipher), God will restore the third heaven and earth which is where we will spend eternity.
